This poem makes me think of how different life at school is from life during the summer. This poem reflects on all the events that can only happen in the summer and how unique life can be. During school, your life is crammed with tons of academic work. You have no time to yourself and you never really have time to just daydream and think about life. This poem talks about how throughout the summer, you have time to be yourself adn do what you want. It says that, “Summer was a time when unicorns were still possible and the purpose of knees was to be skinned.” This shows that summer is a time for you to break free from civilization and have the time to dream about unicorns and do what you want. Summer for me is exactly what this poem is talking about, a time to break free. During school I am constantly stressed and worried about grades and school work. But as soon as summer arrives, all that stress just falls off and I have nothing to worry about. Summer gives me a chance where I can break away from everything that has been a burden on my shoulders and just enjoy the time when I can do what I want. Summer is a chance to free yourself from the shackles that have held you to civilization and be who you truly want to be. But when school starts again ,all the memories of the past summer are forgotten and the seemingly endless school year begins again. The poem says, “During that summer, which may have never been at all… ,” this shows that once summer is over, it seems like it never occured. You have gone back to school life and all the fond memories seem like dreams. This happens to me every year. On the first day of school, that dreadingly familiar feeling, that the fun stops now, creeps up upon me. I realize there is no time for games, fun, or time to dream about unicorns, my school life is back and my summer dreams are gone.

Fluoride was first discovered naturally in water in 1901 by a young dental school graduate named Frederick S. McKay when he visited Colorado. He was astounded that many of the townspeople had brown stained teeth bu surprisingly the mottled teeth were resistant to decay. Then in 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first city to fluoride water. In order for us to have figured out how and why to use fluoride in water, we had to use it in toothpaste first. Fluoride in toothpaste reduces the ability for bacteria in plaque to decay your tooth. It then also helps to remineralize your teeth where acid has started to decay. The first step was to find what fluoride compounds needed to be used in the toothpaste. Some of the compounds found were; stannous fluoride sodium fluoride and sodium monofluorophosphate. the toothpaste companies then had to decide what compound they were going to combine with the abrasive substances already used in the toothpaste during that time period. Procter and gamble was the first company to find a compound that could be mixed with the abrasive substances in the toothpaste. Their solution was to mix stannous fluoride with calcium pyrophosphate. Their product was then launched in 1955 as Crest. After this there were many advances in toothpaste such as advanced formulas that uses hydrated silica. Once the correct compounds were found that would prevent tooth decay, fluoride could be added to toothpastes and mouth washes to keep teeth clean. After putting fluoride in toothpaste, scientists and companies thought they could add fluoride to drinking water. Hydrofluosilicic (HFS) and sodium silicofluoride (SSF) were added to water. Some side affects of using fluoride in drinking water that are concerning me are the problem of staining. If there are more then 1ppm of fluoride in drinking water, it will cause your teeth to stain like the people in Colorado that Frederick found. Your teeth would turn brown and be permanently stained for the rest of your life. Also some people might want to really stain their teeth. If they added more fluoride to their water the compounds could have harmful effects on their bodies. These are some of the reasons why adding fluoride to water concerns me but i am not the only one. Others disapprove of the idea. The don’t know what fluoride is and when people don’t understand they learn to fear it. They have no idea of what fluoride does or its purpose in the water and toothpaste so they are unsure whether or not to use it. Though some things concern me about adding fluoride to drinking water, I am not opposed and think it is a great idea!!! It will prevent tooth decay and cause people to live happier and healthier lives because they don’t have fillings or crowns on their teeth. Fluoride wasn’t added to my parents drinking water when they were little so now they have to live with cavities and tooth decay. I am sure that if they were in my position too when they were little, they would have added fluoride to drinking water. Fluoride could make a whole new generation free from decay and the pains of decayed teeth.
